On 9 May 2022, at 6:00 pm, the art historian Guicciardo Sassoli de’ Bianchi Strozzi gave a talk at the Museo della Grafica in Palazzo Lanfranchi, organised as part of the 19th edition of “Amico Museo – Aria di primavera nei musei toscani”, an initiative promoted by the Tuscany Region.
During the talk, Sassoli presented the exhibition The Centenary Triptych. Leonardo 1919, Raphael 1920, Dante 1921, which he curated together with Roberto Antonelli and Virginia Lapenta and which had previously been shown at Villa Farnesina in Rome.
The exhibition, organised in collaboration with Villa Farnesina – Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, explored the cultural climate and aesthetic taste of the immediate post-war period, focusing on the celebrations of the centenaries of Leonardo da Vinci in 1919, Raphael in 1920 and Dante Alighieri in 1921.
The talk offered an opportunity to explore the exhibition project in depth and to reflect on the role these celebrations played in early twentieth-century Italian artistic culture, in the relationship between the memory of tradition and new forms of modernity.
