From 14 March to 15 April 2025, in the celebrated setting of the Loggiato di San Bartolomeo – Fondazione Sant'Elia in Palermo, the solo exhibition of the sculptor Gioni David Parra entitled Gioni David Parra. New trajectories of the sublime was presented for the first time in Sicily. Promoted by the Associazione Art Promoter of Daniele Crippa and curated by Guicciardo Sassoli de' Bianchi Strozzi and Lisa Parra, the exhibition was born from an idea by Carmelo Magistro and Lisa Parra.
From the opening day (Friday 14 March 2025 at 6:00 pm), works from the sculptor's most iconic series were on view to the public, following a series of museum and institutional exhibitions in which Parra had featured over the previous year. Among these, the solo show From the Lunae to the Stele at the Museo delle Statue Stele Lunigianesi (June-July 2024) and his participation in the permanent exhibition Art in the Embassy: Contemporary Italy in Vilnius, in the rooms of the Italian Embassy in Lithuania (opened in October 2024).
On the ground floor of the Loggiato di San Bartolomeo a selection of wall-mounted works was displayed, while the first floor housed the sculptures and installations, set among the historic arcades of the complex. The catalogue, published by De Ferrari editore, was presented at the exhibition's finissage.
Gioni David Parra (1962) is known for his distinctive treatment of a noble material such as marble and stone in general. An eclectic artist, over the years he has expanded his sculptural production to shape space itself, working on the wall, on plinths and on the ground. Through a process of dematerialising stone, pushed towards invisible planes, he traces new trajectories of the sublime. Nonetheless, in reading his work we can identify the fundamental pillars of sculpture: solid and void, whole and fragment, icons and sequences. The author of public works, he is represented in numerous museum collections and works with national and international galleries.
