Vilnius, Italian Embassy in Lithuania, 3 October 2024 – 2028
The exhibition Art in the Embassy: Contemporary Italy in Vilnius is organised by the Italian Embassy and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Vilnius as part of the programme for the Giornata del Contemporaneo. The launch event on 3 October 2024 is hosted in collaboration with the 15th edition of the International Art Fair ArtVilnius (4–6 October 2024).
The group exhibition is curated by Guicciardo Sassoli de’ Bianchi Strozzi (Associazione Nuova Artemarea), with Daniele Crippa and Manuela Valentini, and aims to promote contemporary Italian art in Lithuania with a selection of 45 works by 42 masters of Italian art from the 1950s to the present day. Most of the artists are also represented in the collection of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (Collezione Farnesina). For the occasion, the curators selected masterpieces by established masters, twentieth-century rediscoveries and young talents for a research-led exhibition.
As Ambassador Emanuele de Maigret pointed out: “The aim is to set in motion a virtuous cycle with the institutions, which will see the space hosted and promoted within the Italian Embassy as the driving force of Italian art in Lithuania.”
Thanks to this exhibition the Embassy has become a museum of contemporary Italian art in the heart of Vilnius. The Embassy is housed in the building which, in the early twentieth century, was home to the Vilnius Electricity Company, crowned by a sculpture of Elektra symbolising the entry into the new age of light. Today the building shines once again through art as a universal language of dialogue.
